Description: Whether as a side effect of globalisation, media revolution or digitisation, writing has become as important a tool for the architect as drawing. This course addresses three basic types of writing useful to architects, teaching the techniques through examples and application. It is important to understand what this course does not do. It does not teach English Grammar or any form of technical specifications writing. It prepares the student of architecture to communicate his drawings/projects in words, for a crit, a report or an article. It teaches to construct arguments for and against a project, to assess a project critically and to learn from examples of descriptive, critical and analytical pieces selected specially for the course from architects and critics worldwide.

Objectives: At the end of the 10 sessions, the students can expect to:
· Be able to assess a work of architecture critically, weighing its strong and weak aspects.
· Have a basic knowledge of architectural writing trends worldwide.
· Be able to write short pieces for juries or crits and learn to counter criticism through self evaluation.
· Be able to write an academic paper on a piece of work.
· Be able to write a journalistic report/article on a piece of work.
· Be confident about their ability to communicate design through writing.

Learning method: The course will be instructed using:
Lectures- showing examples of written texts to illustrate a point, slides and advise.
Seminars- where projects submitted by students will be discussed in light of the lectures and examples cited.
Tutorials- if and when necessary to discuss students’ written work to be submitted every two weeks/ four sessions.
